Amanda Bynes' lawyer hopes for resolution to New York bong case

A lawyer for troubled star Amanda Bynes says he thinks her New York bong-throwing case will be resolved soon.

The 27-year-old actress didn't appear in court Thursday. She remains in a psychiatric hospital in California.

"If she's not able to be here it doesn't mean there can't be a resolution on the case," attorney Gerald Shargel said, according to the New York Daily News, adding "it's uncertain when she'll be released."

She was charged earlier this year with reckless endangerment and marijuana possession. Police say they saw her heave a bong from her 36th floor Manhattan apartment.

She has pleaded not guilty to drunken driving in California. Her attorney there argued Wednesday that she needed a competency hearing.

Shargel says he's working with prosecutors to resolve the case. That could mean charges would be dropped if she agrees to stay out of trouble.

Last month, a California judge granted Bynes' mother a temporary conservatorship, allowing her to control decisions involving her daughter's health and finances. It will be in effect until Sept. 30.
