Joseph Weekley is charged with the involuntary manslaughter of Aiyana, who was killed in May 2010 when members of a special response team burst into her home in search of a man wanted for an earlier murder.

Detroit police have said Weekley's gun accidentally went off after he was bumped into by the girl's grandmother, the Detroit Free Press reports. Aiyana was shot in the head during the raid.

Aiyana's family has filed civil lawsuits against the city of Detroit and the police department as well as A&E Television Network for encouraging police aggression by videotaping the raid.
