Add Spell Checking to Internet Explorer

Many people have long abandoned Internet Explorer for Firefox. There are a lot of reasons, but a lot of folks cite one in particular: The lack of spell checking in IE. If you're sticking with Microsoft's browser but lament the lack of spell checking, then lament no more.

Speckie is an Internet Explorer add-on that delivers real-time spell checking. It works with any version of the browser that you are likely to have; versions 6, 7, 8, or 9, as well as Windows XP, Vista, and 7, in both 32 and 64 bit varieties. In other words, it works with everything. It's not the first spell checking add-on for IE, but it's a rare one that doesn't come packaged in an add-on that includes a thousand other features you probably don't need or want.

The add-on installs quickly and effortlessly, and delivers red squiggles in text boxes to indicate you got something wrong. The spelling suggestions are smart and reasonable, and if you need more than just English, you'll be happy to find that Speckie has 30 dictionaries, covering 3 varieties of worldwide English and key languages from Catalan to Slovak.

Speckie has some of the same glitches I've seen in some other browser spell checkers, such as funkiness in large text boxes such as comment fields and blogging tools. In those situations, the red squiggles are slow to appear or don't show up unless you actually click on words. Because of that, Speckie is not a perfect spell checker, but perhaps it can fill the void while we wait for Microsoft to someday build a spell checker into Internet Explorer once and for all.
