Add a Slashed Zero in Word

Do you ever wish your documents could distinguish between the letter O and the number 0 more clearly with one of those fancy zeros with a slash through it? Well, you can, and it's easy to do. Windows Fanatics has a short tutorial on how to create the slashed zero in Word (they claim it's for Word 2002, but it works in any modern version of Word). And I'll show you an even better method.

Here's how to make a slashed zero:

  1. Click the cursor where you want the slashed zero to appear.
  2. Press Ctrl+F9. You'll see brackets appear.
  3. Type the following (or copy and paste it from this post): eq o (0,/)
  4. Press Shift+F9. The code should resolve itself into a slashed zero.
You're done, but I can make it even easier -- instead of going through all those steps every time, add this character to your AutoCorrect list. Do this:
  1. Copy the slashed zero.
  2. Click the Office button, and then click Word Options.
  3. In the Word Options dialog box, click Proofing and click AutoCorrect Options.
  4. The slashed zero should already be in the Replace With field. Enter a shortcut, like *0 in the Replace field and click OK.
Now, whenever you type your shortcut (like *0), you'll automatically get the slashed zero character.
