Abandoned newborn left in handbag survives night in 40-degree weather, Texas police say

An unidentified newborn boy was found abandoned inside a handbag near a Central Texas home Corsicana Police Department

(CBS/AP) CORSICANA, Texas - Police said an abandoned newborn boy was found alive in a handbag near a Central Texas home Sunday night and survived when temperatures dipped into the 40s, CBS DFW reports.

Corsicana police described the newborn as Hispanic or white, who still had his umbilical cord attached and was wrapped in a towel that was in a pillowcase and inside the handbag. He was found under a carport on a resident's side doorstep.

Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said police responded to a call from a woman about the infant, and the boy was transported to Navarro Regional Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

"The baby appears stable. That was the priority last night," Bratton said Monday. "Our top priority today is to find the mother."

Corsicana police is interested in determining the circumstances surrounding the abandonment, including why the newborn was not delivered to the hospital.
