Hernandez's lawyers filed the postponement request Tuesday in federal court. They say it would be legally unfair to Hernandez to permit the lawsuit to continue while he is defending himself in the shooting death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. Hernandez, 23, has pleaded not guilty to Lloyd's slaying and weapons charges and is being held without bail.

In the Florida lawsuit, 30-year-old Alexander Bradley, of Connecticut, claims Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a Miami strip club in February. Bradley seeks at least $100,000 in damages.

At the time of the alleged shooting, Bradley reportedly told police he did not know who had shot him. CBS Boston reported Bradley is now looking for Hernandez to pay for facial reconstruction that he needs as a result of the alleged gunshot wound. The lawsuit was filed four days before the body of Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was found near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Mass. on June 17.

Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated the killing of Lloyd, a semi-pro football player who had been dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée, because he was upset at Lloyd for talking to people Hernandez had problems with at a nightclub days earlier.

In July, Bradley was ordered to appear before a grand jury investigating the former tight end.
