A-listers at Cannes step out for AIDS charity event

(CBS/AP) - A-listers from entertainment and fashion threw on their evening finest and gathered Thursday night for the annual amFAR Cinema Against AIDS benefit during the Cannes Film Festival.

Kanye West, Sean Penn, Janet Jackon, Gwen Stefani and designer Karl Largerfield were among the bevy of stars mingling in the crowd at the glitzy fundraising gala, held at the exclusive seaside Hotel du Cap.

Cannes jury members Jude Law, Uma Thurman and Robert De Niro were also in attendance, along with a few royals, including Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and Monaco's Prince Albert II with fiancee Charlene Wittstock.

Founded by the late Elizabeth Taylor, this year's charity dinner-cum-auction raised a record-breaking $14 million for AIDS research.

A portrait of Taylor by Andy Warhol was up for auction, along with a Herb Ritz photo of the screen icon, which fetched for euro 150,000 ($212,835).

In past years, Sharon Stone has emceed the evening's festivities, but she was absent Thursday, so dozens of stars took turns to take her place, including actors Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn and Patrick Dempsey.

The night's musical entertainment was provided by Courteney Love, Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and Boy George.

Other stars in attendance: models Naomi Campbell, Bar Refaeli, and Alessandra Ambrosio; actresses Freida Pinto, Kirsten Dunst and Rosario Dawson; and designer Roberto Cavalli, who was escorted by George Clooney's girlfriend, Italian model Elisabetta Canalis.
