A Life On Record
June Carter Cash has spent 60 years in the music industry as a member of the legendary Carter Family and as the wife of country singer Johnny Cash, reports CBS This Morning Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.
Now she's releasing a new album of her own, called Press On, which she says chronicles her life in music.
"I think you could say it's almost like a book of my life," she explains. "In the beginning, I start with a song from my family, the Carter Family. I'm always secure singing some of the things that they did." Those things include the classic Will the Circle?
She spent 30 years making music with her family before falling in love with country legend Johnny Cash, whom she married in 1968.
"I didn't want to admit, to begin with, that I had really fallen in love with Johnny Cash," June recalls. "I kept telling myself, 'This is not gonna happen to me... There's no way I'm gonna get mixed up with this man.'"
But she did, and wrote the song Ring of Fire about their relationship.
June and Johnny Cash have been married more than 30 years. Despite his bout with Shy Drager Syndrome, a disease of the nervous system, she says he's a very big part of her career.
"He is recovering quite well, and he feels good enough to where, if I take a trip, he takes one, too," says June. "He's always with me, and I'm always with him. We're there to support each other."
June says that she most enjoys listening to the music of Garth Brooks and Sheryl Crow, and she also likes rap music. And her husband is working on a new album.
