A Heart For San Francisco

Singer Tony Bennett has left his heart in San Francisco. Again.

Bennett, whose signature theme song is I Left My Heart In San Francisco, buried a red crystal heart under a hotel on posh Nob Hill, reports CBS station KPIX-TV.

The heart, as well as a signed copy of the song's sheet music and an autographed CD, were placed in a time capsule for the Fairmont Hotel's newly-renovated Venetian Room. It was in that room in 1962 that Bennett premiered the song that made the international hit parades and earned him the gratitude of the city by the Bay.

The song, one of the best-known anthems in the world, earned Bennett the first two of his eight Grammy awards. Bennett also received an Emmy Award and a Cable Ace Award for his TV special, Live By Request...Tony Bennett.

"What an honor. I've lived a charmed life,'' the 73-year-old singer said.

Born in New York to Italian immigrants, Bennett started his music career while in the military during World War II and was "discovered" and moved to California by comedian Bob Hope. In addition to his singing, which has been discovered by a new generation via appearances on MTV, Bennett has gained acclaim for his original art work. He also is the author of two books.
