69-year-old woman arrested for trying to castrate husband, say Calif. cops
(CBS/AP) PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - A 69-year-old woman from Palm Springs was arrested after her husband said she tried to cut off his genitals with a pair of scissors, police say.
CBS Los Angeles reports Virginia Valdez was arrested for suspicion of mayhem, assault with a deadly weapon and spousal abuse, police Sgt. Melissa Desmarais said.
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. Saturday when police received a call from the residence. "Officers made contact with the 62-year-old male victim, who said his wife had made attempts to sever his penis with scissors, resulting in injuries to the area," Desmarais said.
Desmarais said the victim needed medical attention for his injuries, which were not life threatening. He has since been released from the hospital.
Palm Springs Sgt. Kyle Stjerne said the couple has been married for 32 years, but what they were fighting about at their home remains under investigation, says the Los Angeles Times."It was just a long-standing marital dispute, and we are not sure what caused her to do it," he said.
Stjerne described the scissors as resembling poultry shears. "They were more heavy duty than the standard office scissors."
Valdez was booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility and according to online jail records, Valdez was released Saturday after posting $100,000 bail.
She is scheduled to appear in court next month, police said.
