375 colleges that still want you!

(MoneyWatch) Did you get shut out of all the schools where you applied? Or maybe you just aren't happy with the schools that accepted you?

There is still hope.

May 1, the national college decision day, has come and gone for students to send in their deposit for the upcoming school year, but there is still an opportunity for unhappy high school seniors.

Every year, the National Association for College Admission Counseling releases a list of colleges and universities that have vacancies. On this year's list, which was released on Thursday, there are at least 375 colleges and universities that are still in the market for freshman and/or transfer applicants. Seventy percent of these institutions are private.

Since 2000, the number of schools still looking for students is at its highest mark. Last year, for instance, just 279 schools listed vacancies on NACAC's Space Availability Survey.

Among the public institutions still courting students are such institutions as Arizona State University, Evergreen State College, University of Hawaii, University of Iowa, University of Kansas and University of Southern Florida.

Private institutions with spots available include Seton Hall, Kalamazoo College, Juniata College, Lawrence University, Knox College, Lynchburg College, Villanova University, Chapman University, Centre College and Gonzaga University.

These schools still have financial aid available and 94% of the colleges can offer housing available for last-minute students. The schools also have room for transfer students.

The vacancy list will be available until June 29, but as spaces fill up schools will remove their names from the list. If interested, you should jump on this now.
