3 Ways to Recycle an Old PC
I tend to stockpile old computers and monitors in my home office. Not because I love having a stack of beige boxes, but because recycling those old machines seems like a lot of work. Actually, it's really not. Here are three places you can recycle old PCs with very little effort, and possibly get something in return.
Best Buy. I've mentioned this before -- Best Buy's e-cycle program takes old computer hardware, often for free, though there's a $10 fee for some computers. On the other hand, you get a $10 Best Buy gift card in exchange for the recycling fee.
National Christina Foundation. The National Christina Foundation doesn't just break your old computer down to scrap metal and toxic waste, but instead directs donations of used computer equipment to a host of non-profit organizations, schools, and public agencies throughout the country.
Dell Reconnect. Here's another service that keeps your old computer out of the landfill. And unlike Best Buy, Dell Reconnect does it for free. After you drop off your old gear, Dell works with Goodwill to find ways to make use of the computer hardware without disposing of it, and does actually recycle those parts which can't be repurposed. As the holiday season approaches, maybe you'll decide to do something nice for people and the planet by donating or recycling your old hardware. If you do, be sure to perform these 4 critical steps before you give away your PC.
