France 2 – 1 Australia

Two penalty kicks, a chipped shot and goal line technology

France kicked off their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance Saturday against Australia early Saturday morning. They were heavily favored for the opening match of Group C.

After a scoreless first half, both teams conceded penalties, trading goals early on in the second half of play. In the 80th minute, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba broke through late with a chipped shot on goal that bounced backward into the net for a France lead. The Australian keeper caught it after goal appeared to have bounced down and into his arms. But after the referee's watch indicated the ball had bounced fully into the net, it was called a goal.

France never relinquished that lead for the next 10 minutes. Even after 5 minutes of stoppage time, Australia couldn't do much and France took their first win of the tournament.

Argentina 1 – 1 Iceland

Iceland's first-ever World Cup goal and a missed penalty by Lionel Messi

Underdog Iceland played their first World Cup match against Argentina today. The South American side stars Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria. But they were not enough to win as Iceland salvaged a draw Saturday morning.

Aregentina took an early lead in the 19th minute as Sergio Aguero tallied his first goal of the World Cup. But that lead was short-lived as Iceland proved their European Championship run was no chance accident as Alfred Finnbogason scored Iceland's first-ever World Cup goal, just four minutes later. The half closed with a goal a side.

In the 64th minute, Argentina's Meza was taken down in the box, resulting in a penalty opportunity. Messi stepped up but the Iceland keeper was up to the task. That missed opportunity may have been the difference as Agentina fails to win their opening World Cup match for the first time since 1990.

Iceland is the smallest country to ever qualify for the World Cup. While underdogs, Iceland knocked off powerhouse England a few years ago to reach the European Championship quarterfinals. Today was their first World Cup match.

GOALS

Peru 0 – 1 Denmark

This is Peru's first time back to the world Cup since 1982. That year, they never made it out of the group stage with 2 draws and a loss for only 2 points.

This was a game of missed opportunities for Peru. Christian Cueva shot his penalty kick attempt well over the bar late in the first half. Schmeichel was solid in goal for Denmark as they seal their first win.
