2-year-old found dead after mom found walking naked along Calif. highway

(CBS/KHSL) COFFEE CREEK, Calif. - Investigators in northwestern California discovered on Saturday the body of 2-year-old Sophie Pedreros, who was reported missing after her mother was found wandering naked along a highway.

Though the Trinity County Sheriff's Office has not released any details about the girl's death, her 30-year-old mother Claudia Pedreros, of McKinleyville, has been charged with murder.

According to CBS affiliate KHSL, Claudia Pedreros was reported missing Friday along with her daughter.

Police later found her car abandoned at a campground north of Coffee Creek, about 250 miles north of Sacramento.

Hours later, police discovered Claudia Pedreros wandering nude along a highway and told deputies she didn't remember having a daughter.

Investigators believe she suffers from mental illness.

Once the child's father spoke with Claudia Pedreros, police say the woman was able to piece together the hours before her daughter's death.

The Trinity County Sheriff says more details will be released later today.
