2 dead of suspected drug overdose at Md. concert
COLUMBIA, Md. - The family of a University of Maryland student who died from a suspected drug overdose while attending a concert over the weekend says they believe the 20-year-old unknowingly drank drug-tainted water, reports CBS Baltimore.
North Carolina native Tyler Viscardi was the first to die after the Mad Decent Block Party at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md. on Friday. A 17-year-old boy from Woodbridge, Va., also died. The teen's name was being withheld at his family's request.
Police said it doesn't appear Viscardi and the 17-year-old knew each other. Toxicology tests in the deaths are pending.
Authorities say there were problems at the same concert last year, but there were no overdoses.
Viscardi's family released a statement saying they believe the 20-year-old was "the victim of a terrible mishap."
"...we know this much. He was attending a music festival in Maryland with some friends. According to his close college friend who was with him, the afternoon was hot and he drank water that was given to him by others who were in the area. We believe that this contained a substance, unbeknownst to him, to which he had a toxic reaction," the statement said in part.
Rescue crews were reportedly called to the venue in Columbia on Friday night to treat dozens of people for drug overdoses. Authorities said about 20 people were taken to the hospital, many with drug-related symptoms.
According to the station, police believe people were taking a powerful form of ecstasy known as "Molly."
