14-year-old boy surrenders in Oakland sex assaults, robberies, say cops

(CBS) OAKLAND, Calif. - Police have arrested a 14-year-old boy who surrendered in connection with two alleged sexual assaults on women in West Oakland.

CBS San Francisco reports Brionn Glasper is suspected in the two sex assaults and robberies on the nights of January 6 and 12.

Police said a woman, 28, was approached by a male who simulated a firearm and demanded her wallet. The suspect then forced her to an isolated area where he sexually assaulted her.

In the second attack, another woman, also 28, was approached by a person on a bicycle, and the same sequence of events took place.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports police said the boy had simulated a gun in the attacks, but said they had not yet determined whether he had, in fact, been armed.

Johnna Watson, Oakland police spokeswoman, said that it is unusual for them to release the identity of a minor in an ongoing investigation. She said she thinks "a lot of pressure from the community" after police publicized the crimes led him to turn himself in.

"We strongly believe that if we did not put this information out, in the interest of public safety, he would not have turned himself in," Watson said.
