10 Ways to Fix Your Biggest Security Risks

To paraphrase the old saying, everybody hates computer security, but nobody does anything about it. Well, if you're the one in charge of doing something about it for your organization, you'll appreciate this: PC World offers 10 fixes for today's worst security nightmares.

These aren't just tired old tips like, "Make sure your anti-virus definitions are up to date." Here's an example:

Fix 1: Patch Over the Software Bull's-Eye Have you turned off automatic updates for Windows and other programs on the rationale that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Then consider this: Your programs may be very, very broken, and you don't know it. The days of big splashy viruses that announce themselves to PC users are over. The modern cybercriminal prefers to invisibly take control of your PC, and unpatched software gives them the perfect opportunity to do so.

So turn on automatic update features for any software that offers the service -- it's your quickest and easiest option for getting patches.

Virtually all the fixes in the story revolve around free and/or freeware solutions, so you can keep your wallet in your pocket where it belongs.

Now fess up: Are you doing everything you could/should be to keep your systems protected? Or do you think a lot of these recommendations are overkill? I tend to live in the latter camp.
