2 people shot, more gunfire heard near Ferguson protest

FERGUSON, Missouri -- Two people were shot in separate incidents near the scene of a protest Tuesday night and early Wednesday in Ferguson, Missouri, the city that had been a focal point of demonstrations over police violence last summer.

There was no word on the condition of either victim or whether either shooting had anything to do with the protest.

In the first incident, a man was shot in the leg, authorities said.

CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV reported the shooting occurred near the intersection of West Florissant and Canfield. That was the center of protests over the death last summer of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, 18, who was shot by a white Ferguson police officer who has since quit the force.

Authorities said the man who was wounded Tuesday night ran to a nearby Chinese restaurant to get help. An ambulance then arrived and took him to a hospital.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports police at the scene of the shooting took one person taken into custody and recovered a gun.

Witnesses said people in a crowd threw rocks at police officers who responded to the shooting.

St. Louis Alderman Antonio French, who was on the scene, told KMOV someone else was shot in the neck on nearby Canfield Drive around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday. That person was driven by car to a hospital.

KMOV reports shots were fired at other times throughout the night and early morning.

And it appears there was some looting, as well:

The incidents came as Baltimore was coping with the aftermath of rioting Monday over the death of a man in police custody.
