KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One man is dead and another is in custody after a shooting this morning near Kansas City's city hall, reports CBS affiliate KCTV.

Police officers were called around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to the area, where they joined passersby in attempting to assist the victim. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died in surgery, KCTV reports. His identity has not yet been released.

Officers were able to catch the suspected shooter on foot less than a mile away.
