ST. PAUL, Minn. — A man was shot in an apartment building in St. Paul Monday morning, police said, prompting a heavy law enforcement presence for hours in a residential neighborhood.

Officers responded to a shooting on the 1100 block of Westminster Street around 3 a.m., the St. Paul Police Department said. They found a man who had been shot in the back. He was taken to Regions Hospital and his injuries are considered grave, police said.

Police were unable to find the shooter, but said this likely was not a random shooting.

There was a heavy police presence at the scene for hours Monday morning, including multiple squad cars and SWAT vehicles. By 7:30 a.m., police had mostly cleared the scene.
