Two People Killed During Delray Beach Flooding
DELRAY BEACH (CBSMiami) – Many cars remain stranded on Via Flora Drive Friday night after Thursday's relentless rains in Delray Beach caused inches of water to accumulate.
The historic flooding in Delray Beach not only stranded cars, but claimed the lives of two people.
The woman's husband told CBS4 News reporter Joan Murray that Elsa Marquez, 56, is the victim.
Jorge Marquez said his wife is a mother of five and was leaving work at a retirement community when her car became submerged in flood waters.
Authorities told the Palm Beach Post that the woman likely drove off the road in the 5800 block of Heritage Way off of Via Flora Road north of Atlantic Avenue and east of Jog Road. Officials believe she was unable to see where the road ended and a canal began.
Rescue crews told the paper they were able to pull the woman from the car, but she later died.
Flood Of Trouble In Palm Beach County, Treasure Coast
Authorities said a man was swept off his feet in the Kings Point area while walking through waste-high water. Harry Kruelwitz, 90, who walks with a cane, died when he veered off the path where he was walking and went into a canal. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue found his body submerged.
By nightfall Friday, the water had barely receded and the roads remained nearly impassable. Many residents were stuck indoors to assess the damage, hoping for sun on Saturday to begin to dry things out.
Friday night a citizens patrol officer with Palm Beach County Sheriff's office is warning drivers about the danger of driving thru a flooded road and elected officials said the drainage system obviously needs to upgraded,
Many homeowners that were affected are simply hoping the water recedes and their insurance companies respond quickly to help them.
