Whopping Weekend Rainfall Totals For S. Florida

MIAMI (CBS Miami) – It was a wet weekend for South Florida with some communities receiving several inches of rain in a matter of hours.

In Southwest Ranches, a National Weather Service employee documented 13.74 inches of rain from July 9th through July 13th with 8.74 inches of rain falling Saturday alone.

Sunday afternoon, a trained spotter in Pembroke Pines reported to the NWS, 3.24 inches of rain fell in one hour.

Much of the heavy rain was documented across Broward County and the counties farther to the north.

The Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, where data used by the NWS is recorded, has received more than nine inches of rainfall since July 1.  The increased rainfall at that location has led to a six inch surplus of rain for the month of July, thus far.

Miami did not receive as much rainfall over the weekend. However, the Miami International Airport, also where rainfall is officially recorded, has seen more than five inches of rain since the first of July putting rainfall totals nearly two inches above normal for the month.

More rainfall is expected Monday and a more typical afternoon thunderstorm pattern is expected later in the week.

Some flooding is likely due to the ground being saturated.

Meteorologists recommend drivers do not proceed down streets that appear flooded.  It is best to seek an alternate route.
