Top Spots Near South Florida To Watch The Geminid Meteor Shower

The Geminid meteor shower will light up the night late on December 13 into dawn on December 14, with the peak being at 2 a.m. ET. Many consider the Geminid meteor shower to be the most remarkable and spectacular of the year's meteor showers. In fact, viewers don't need telescopes or any equipment to view the shower. Grab some hot chocolate and blankets, and head to one of these great viewing points in South Florida to watch this amazing natural wonder!

Located just outside of the everglades at Markham Park, this observatory is owned and operated by the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association. The observatory is known for its star gazing that lasts until sunrise, which is perfect for this Geminid meteor shower, as the peak is at 2 a.m. ET and will be visible until dawn. Even though the shower is visible by the naked eye, this observatory hosts some great equipment to catch an even closer glimpse. The Everglades Astronomical Society (EAS) often uses and recommends the Fakahatchee Observing Site located in the Fakahatchee. It is conveniently located just off Interstate 75, making it an easy observation spot to go view the meteor shower. For exact directions to get to the site, click here. As it is located in the heart of the Everglades, it's important to watch out for the wildlife in the evening hours, especially alligators, and it is best to travel with a group of people there at night.

National Key Deer Wildlife Refuge was actually nominated by American Profile as one of the top star gazing sites in America. Located on Big Pine Key, it is enough away from the bright Miami lights to provide clear views of the night sky. Be on the lookout for plenty of deer in the park as well. The Southern Cross Astronomical Society (SCAS), based out of Miami, also hosts many star watching events at this park.

View the Geminid meteor shower and the stars in one of the most notable ways- a cruise. Schooner Western Union offers stargazer cruises both to the public and private groups. It is for all ages, and the fee includes an astronomer as a guide, as well as beer, wine and sodas while on board. Prices are $49 for adults, and children under twelve years old are $29; however, for those who book online at least 24 hours in advance, they will receive a 10% discount.
