Autopsy Reveals Woman Killed In Palmetto Crash Was Pregnant

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Three girls remain hospitalized following a crash on the Palmetto Expressway that killed a pregnant mother on New Year's Day.

The children were among a group of seven kids and three adults attempting to cross the 826 on foot.

A Ford SUV slammed into them near Okeechobee Road, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Angela Johnson, 24, did not survive.

Her family learned she was pregnant at the time of her death following an autopsy.

Johnson's daughter, Kayla Ross, 4, was critically hurt.

She suffered severe head trauma and is having frequent seizures, according to relatives.

"She's moving. Opening her eyes. Holding my hand," her aunt Andral Johnson said. "It's dangerous. That a highway. Who would cross a highway?"

"Those are questions that will be asked later. This is really not the time," said Keisha Harris.

Harris' nieces, Lexis Burnette, 7, Briyanna Thomas, 9, were also hurt.

"Right now, we're just focused on the kids," Harris said. "We're focused on those 3 girls."

The group was crossing the expressway to get to Chuck E. Cheese's, a monthly outing the kids looked forward to.

"You gotta understand these are little kids. Little kids you say Chuck E. Cheese or anything that's fun. They want to go," said Harris.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating whether the other adults involved should face charges.

"There is no doubt that they put those children in harm's way," FHP Trooper Joe Sanchez said.

"I would still trust them. They're loving people. They love those kids with their life," Harris explained.

The driver of that Ford SUV, Renato Rodriguez, will not be cited for the crash.
