MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A southwest Miami-Dade teenager was shot during an attempted robbery in front of his home early Wednesday morning.
Police say at around 2 a.m., Christian Aguilar, 18, had just parked his car in front of his residence at SW 187th Street and SW 123rd Court when he was ambushed by three armed males.
Aguilar spoke to CBS4's Gaby Fleischman over the phone from his hospital bed at Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he is recovering.
"It's scary and I don't know why they did this to me," said Aguilar. "I could have died."
Aguilar said he just got home from picking up coffee so he could stay up and study when he was attacked. He said he still had his seabelt on when the three men demanded he get out of the car.
"They told me 'get out, get out, get out,' and I couldn't so then they hit me in the face, punched me," recalled Aguilar. "They tried to pull me out of the car but I couldn't get out because my seatbelt was still on."
One of the men shot at Aguilar. The bullet went through the door of his Honda Civic and hit him in the side.
"I got out of the car and I couldn't breathe. I started trying to run towards the house," said Aguilar. "I was like, 'I'm going to die'."
The trio took off empty handed. Aguilar was able to make it inside his home to get help. His roomate heard the gunshot and called police as soon as he noticed his friend was injured.
"He told me 'Jesus, help, help, I might die'," said Jesus Gonzalez. "I'm emotional, I'm feeling really bad."
Aguilar was taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center where doctors told him the bullet traveled through his body without hitting any major organs and ended up lodged in his leg.
Aguilar says the men took off in a gold car. If you have any information on this crime call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
