MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami-Dade County paid tribute to fallen FBI agent Laura Schwartzenberger.
A street outside Rockway Middle School in Westchester was renamed after her on Friday. The students at the school requested that a portion of SW 93rd Court be named in her honor because she was a frequent visitor and taught about the hazards of social media.
"Laura Schwartzenberger Way" stretches along SW 93rd Court from Coral Way to 32nd Street.
The gunman, 55-year-old David Lee Huber, later killed himself.
"They put the safety of others above themselves," said FBI special agent Justin Fleck who was a personal friend of Schwartzenberger.
Fleck says Scwartzenberger was passionate about helping children.
"She saw, unfortunately, the worst of the worst, but she knew how these kids could protect themselves, and we will keep that legacy going," said Fleck.
"She loved children and wanted to protect children. She wanted to make sure they knew about the dangers and wouldn't be a victim to those dangers," said Rockway principal Josephine Otero.
After her death students grieved on social media, writing "rest in peace Laura. Thank you for your service."
After the ceremony, PBA union president Steadman Stahl said, "It's refreshing at a time when we see so much anti-police to honor an officer who made the ultimate sacrifice.
