State's High Court To Take Up County Term Limits
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – The issue of term limits for county commissioners in Broward and Sarasota will be taken up by the state's Supreme Court on Tuesday.
The justices will hear oral arguments over the constitutionality of such limits.
The high court's decision will affect all 20 charter counties. Ten of them currently have term limits. The other eight are Brevard, Clay, Duval, Hillsborough, Orange, Palm Beach, Polk and Volusia.
Voters in Miami-Dade, the state's largest county, in January rejected term limits linked to a pay raise for commissioners. A new proposal without a pay raise will be on the November ballot.
The 4th District Court of Appeal has upheld Broward's term limits. A trial judge ruled against Sarasota's limits. The 2nd District Court of Appeal bumped the Sarasota case to the Supreme Court without a decision.
