Sports Agenda for Wednesday (1/25/12)
Big Story:
Chris Bosh saved the day last night, the Panthers can't get out of their own way in overtime, and the Marlins continue to go all in at the free agent table.
When I gave my state of the union I talked about….sports.
Heat: (@Detroit Pistons, 7:30, SunSports HD)
If you missed last night's game with the Cleveland Cavaliers, you missed Chris Bosh again bailing out the Heat while D-Wade continues to heal.
Bosh has exploded in recent games, including last night, when he scored 35 points, pulled down 7 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and committed just 2 turnovers.
LeBron had one of his lowest scoring games this season, putting in just 18 points, grabbing 5 boards, and dishing out 5 assists.
The bench also had a big role in the game with Norris Cole and Udonis Haslem combining for 14 points and 13 rebounds.
It was Cole's best performance in several games and Haslem continues to be the NBA's most dominating rebounder off the bench.
It was impressive the Heat could pull out a victory despite LeBron shooting well below 50 percent and Shane Battier barely able to hit the broad side of a barn.
Still, it is the Cavaliers and the Heat should have been able to dispose of them more quickly.
If you watched the Heat, you're seeing a very tired bunch of players.
This season is going to be wacky and it's going to require the Heat and other teams to sit their stars at some points in the season, especially on the back end of back-to-back or back-to-back-to-back games.
It'll be easier to pull this off for the Heat once they get D-Wade back in the lineup.
That should ease the minutes LeBron and Bosh are having to play every night.
#withoutwade is not pretty for the Heat. Yes, they're winning, but at a big cost.
I'd argue to sit LeBron for about a week once Wade comes back and then do the same with Bosh for a week.
Just to keep them fresh as the hardest part of the season shows up in the next two months.
Remember, it's about the playoffs and a championship, not about winning the most games in the regular season.
Ask the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers if they'd rather win all their games in the regular season, or sneak into the playoffs and get hot!
Florida Panthers: (off until next week)
Stop me if you've heard this before…the Panthers lost in overtime.
Last night's loss to Philadelphia was the Panthers' 11th overtime game this season.
It's ugly and the Panthers finish the first half of the season tied with the Washington Capitals for second in the Southeast Division.
The Panthers are really struggling and they better hope a week of rest will help these guys get their heads together in a hurry.
The Cats are still in seventh place in the eastern conference, but they are tied with New Jersey and Toronto for seventh and eighth.
Another few losses and the increasingly tight Eastern Conference will be too far out of reach for the Panthers to make it into the playoffs.
The Cats are the worst playoff team in the Eastern Conference right now over their last 10 games (3-3-4).
I think the red light warning of danger ahead has gone from dim to brighter than the sun for Panthers fans.
Dolphins:
Not that this surprises anyone, but Todd Bowles will not be back in Miami next season.
Bowles was a finalist for the head coaching job and he'd always be talked about if the team struggled and his record would be compared to that of head coach Joe Philbin.
General manager Jeff Ireland and owner Stephen Ross have been touting the Peyton Manning horn.
I have one thing to say to that….NO!
Look, if you can sign Manning and not have to give anything up and he's been cleared by every doctor in the country to play, okay.
But if there's any question or if he's not completely sold, absolutely not.
I'd rather sacrifice draft picks and jump up to select a healthy RGIII than take a chance on a broken-down Peyton.
Honestly, I think Manning will retire because I don't think doctors will clear him before his roster bonus of $28 million is due in the first few days of March.
I know he has a helluva competitive fire burning in him, but he's just now starting to throw.
The Colts are going to draft Andrew Luck, and it wouldn't surprise me to see them hire Jim Tressel as the head coach.
Hey, at least Tressel can legitimately break the rules and the NFL will turn a blind eye here.
Still, here's a scenario and I ask you what you would do?
Sign Peyton Manning to a 3-year, $65 million contract
Trade two number 1 picks, a number 3 next year, and a number 4 this year to select Robert Griffin III.
I'm leaning towards option number two.
You still have a number 2 this year to draft an offensive tackle to solidify the right side of the line.
I don't know what I'd do, but I still have lots of reservations about the status of Peyton Manning.
