Sports Agenda For Thursday (7/7/11)
Big Story:
Today's big story is anything but the worthless Casey Anthony case. I say worthless because Casey Anthony is to news what Showgirls is to the Academy Awards. That said, I was waiting to see Nancy Grace's head spin around and pea soup shoot out of her mouth the other day.
Okay, the NFL is thisclose to getting a CBA done by tomorrow, and the Marlins won….wait, what?
The Marlins won?!?! Against the Phillies?!?!
Repent, Repent, the end is nigh!!!!
Firsties:
I'm working on a story for the sports page, but after listening to CBS4's Jorge Sedano on his morning radio show, I started thinking, just how bad have the Dolphins been in the last decade plus. It's beginning to look like the Dolphins will have to have "Die Hard" night soon with free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dolphins won a Super Bowl!!
Let's just put it this way, in the realm of sports, the Dolphins are somewhere between the Panthers and a WNBA team.
Marlins: (vs. Houston Astros, 7:10 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
The Marlins did something I honestly didn't think they'd be able to do the rest of the season…beat the Philadelphia Phillies.
The game was won when Mike Stanton smacked a walk-off home run in the tenth inning.
It was Stanton's 17th home run of the season. He's turning into a great hitter, he just needs to raise his .255 average a bit to really elevate his game to the next level.
Anibal Sanchez uncharacteristically struggled in the game, lasting only 4 innings and giving up 5 runs.
The Marlins went 3-12 with runners in scoring position. That's better than the Phillies 1-4, but still, the Marlins bats are still somewhat dormant.
I'm having a hard time getting excited about the Marlins, but at least they are at .500 for the month of July.
The Fish will now turn to a four-game series against the Astros before hitting the All-Star break.
Only one Marlin will be at the All-Star Game, and based upon the Marlins play, that's about all they deserve.
Gaby Sanchez will be the Marlins' lone All-Star this season.
Also, Josh Johnson's still on the DL, but he said he's coming back this season. The team and Johnson are being very cautious, and given the fact that the Marlins are essentially out of the playoff hunt now, bringing Johnson back this season may be worthless to everyone except him.
NFL Labor Update:
Here's how one general manager described the current state of affairs…."It does feel like we're at the 5-yard-line, and we're right there."
Essentially, we need Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith to take the role of Jerome Bettis and power that ball across the goal line.
The deal has to get done by tomorrow in my opinion.
The mediator goes on vacation next week, and losing him could run the risk of having Bettis fumble the ball at the goal line.
And don't look now, but the New York attorney general is set to probe the lockout because of the state's economy would lose millions if games are lost.
