South Florida Thinks Pink & Readies To Race For The Cure

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and that means it's time for South Floridians to lace up their walking and running shoes for the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
The Race for the Cure will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2015 in front of Bayfront Park in downtown Miami.
More 25,000 participants are expected to join the walk/run, which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research. It is the sixth largest Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in the country.
Streets will shut down beginning at 5:00 a.m. and are expected to reopen by 1:00 p.m.
On-site registration opens at 6:00 a.m. The survivor procession and ceremony kicks off the race at 7:30 a.m. when survivors walk to the stage and take part in a ceremony dedicated to honoring breast cancer survivors. The opening ceremony will be emceed by CBS4's Lauren Pastrana.
That's followed by a 5K timed run at 8:45 a.m., then an untimed 5K walk/run at 9:00 a.m. There's also a tot run for kids ages 2-7 being announced by CBS4's Oralia Ortega and Joan Murray, and entertainment all morning on the stage at Bayfront Park.
Once the race is over, there will be a closing ceremony, emceed by CBS4's Rudabeh Shahbazi and Lisa Petrillo. The closing ceremonies include entertainment speeches at Bayfront Park.
Even CBS4 Meteorologist Michael Smith will be there for a live weather segment on Saturday morning.
Participants race to raise cancer research funds, honor survivors and remember the people who didn't survive.
Due to the large crowds and the race course, there will be street detours and closures. Expect delays and plan to arrive early.
Miami Police officers will be deployed along the route to assist motorists.
No handbags or bookbags are allowed at the race.
Participants who are driving should allow plenty of time for increased traffic. Parking will be available in several lots and garages, including the Bayside Marketplace Garage for $3.00 before 8:00 a.m. with $1.00 of the parking fee benefitting Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale.
Participants are also encouraged to ride Metrorail to the Government Center Station, then transfer to
Metromover's Inner Loop and exit at the Bayfront Park Metromover station for a short walk to the event.
