Roundup: Doral Academy Tuning Up For Title Defense, Win FSPA Invitational

In a key state meet tune-up, defending boys' Class 3A state champion Doral Academy won the team title at the 39th Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) High School Invitational Saturday at Sailfish Splash Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

The Firebirds topped a field of 32 boys teams to win with 222 points. Gulf Coast was runner-up with 176.5 points. Doral's girls' team finished fifth with 179. Tampa Plant won the girls team title with 268.5.

Doral also finished second in the combined team standings with 401. Creekside won the combined team title with 416.5 points.

The meet served as a tune-up for next month's state meet at the same site. The Firebirds overcame a disqualification in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 100-yard butterfly.

"The kids look pretty good," said Doral coach Cathy Silveira. "The meet is a great prep for states. I am blessed to have the best team and best team parents ever. The kids danced, met new friends, sang the national anthem and enjoyed high school swimming. High school swimming is the best of the best."

Doral's Adrian Aguilar won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.57 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:32.82.

Aguilar also anchored Doral's winning 200-yard freestyle relay that won in 1:29.07 with teammates Adrian Moya, David Montana and Diego Faucher.

Stephanie Suarez of Doral won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.19.

Pine Crest diver Kevin Mendez won the boys' 1-meter springboard diving event with 498.75 points. Teammate Ishani Singh finished second among girls with 407.75, just two points out of first.

MIAMI-DADE YOUTH FAIR INVITATIONAL

Belen Jesuit, led by double winners Aitor Fungairino and Alejandro Carriazo, won the boys' title at Tamiami Pool.

The Wolverines swept all three relays and won 11 of 12 events to finish with 539 points. Braddock was runner-up with 281.

Fungairino won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.01 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.06. Carriazo won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.50 and 100-yard butterfly in 51.86.

Columbus' Fernando Rodriguez was the only non-Belen winner in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.78.

Braddock won the girls team title with 436 points and Krop was runner-up with 401.

Braddock won five individual events and swept all three relays.

Mariangel Ramirez and Lily Cope were double winners. Ramirez won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:13.44 and 100-yard butterfly in 1:08.38. Cope won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:33.32 and 500-yard freestyle in 6:05.32.

BOWLING

Braddock girls and Miami Christian boys won team titles at the Miami-Dade Youth Fair Championship Tournament at Bird Bowl.

Braddock defeated defending champion and undefeated Ferguson in the Baker bracket round to win the title. Braddock defeated Ferguson, 3-2 in the final and Coral Reef, 3-1, in the semifinals. Ferguson advanced to the final with a victory over TERRA.

Ferguson's Angela Chapman won individual title honors with a high series of 555. Braddock's Patricia Velasco finished with 518.

In the boys' semifinals Miami Christian defeated Killian, 3-1, and Ferguson downed TERRA, 3-1. Miami Christian defeated Ferguson in the final.

Miami Christian's Cody Stevens won the individual title with a 715 series. Teammate Igar Rodriguez was second with 654. Jorge Herrera of Ferguson finished third with 609.

Three-time defending district champion Coral Springs Charter girls' team remained undefeated (6-0) with a 3-0 victory over American Heritage Plantation. High scorers were Crystal Singh, 193; Larkin Kramer, 192; Harmony Romano, 190; and seventh grader Madison Romano, 190. The boys' team improved to 5-1 with a 3-0 win over Miramar. High scorers were Ryan Hernandez with a 204 and Joey Galang with a 200.

GOLF

Columbus boys and Palmetto girls won the team championships at the GMAC Championships at Redlands Golf and Country Club.

Defending champion Columbus finished with 305, 16 strokes better than runner-up Palmetto. The Explorers were led by Robby De Paz with a 3-over 75 and Sharif Amastha with a 76. Teammates Jake Moscoso and Joel Garcia-Lee tied for fifth with 77.

Cole Castro of South Dade, the county's top golfer, won individual medalist honors with an even-par 72.

Palmetto won the girls title with 361 followed by Coral Reef, 372, and American, 422.

Abigail Chai-Onn of Coral Reef defended her title to win the girls medalist honors with 75, two better than she shot in last year's tournament.

Palmetto teammates Alexa Rivas (78) and Katie Burge (89) finished second and third.
