Report: Fins Finalize 2-Year Deal With Finnegan
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins have fortified the defensive secondary by re-signing cornerback Brent Grimes and signing safety Louis Delmas. The Fins added even more depth at cornerback Friday.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dolphins reached an agreement with former Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan. The deal, per Schefter, is expected to be a two-year contract.
Finnegan was at one time one of the league's most physical cornerbacks, often getting into skirmishes with opponents like the Houston Texans' Andre Johnson. Finnegan was considered the top free agent just two years ago and signed a large contract with the Rams.
His play was good in his first season in St. Louis (101 tackles, 1 sack, nine passes defensed, and 3 interceptions), but he battled injuries throughout last season and struggled to finish with 27 tackles, 0 sacks, and just one interception while only playing in seven games.
The Dolphins took a chance on a recently injured star cornerback before the 2013 season when it signed Brent Grimes. All he did was turn in a Pro Bowl season and land a lucrative extension with the Fins just before free agency started.
The Fins are hoping lightning can strike twice and the 30-year-old Finnegan can reenergize his game in Miami. At worst, he will provide depth at cornerback behind Brent Grimes, Jamar Taylor, and Will Davis.
