MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Florida Atlantic University has decided to team up with a private prison company in a deal that will give the GEO Group naming rights to the school's football stadium, according to faulowlaccess.com.
The school has been searching for a sponsor for the stadium since it was constructed, but had struck out until the possible deal with the GEO Group.
But, as Deadspin.com first reported, the GEO Group has been criticized in the past civil libertarians and state and federal regulators who have said GEO "pads its profits by cutting workers wages, skimping on inmate health care, and ignoring safety and sanitation," according to the Palm Beach Post.
GEO denies the allegations. The company's original name may be familiar to Miami-Dade County residents. According to the Palm Beach Post, the company launched as Wackenhut Corrections before moving to Palm Beach County in the 1990's.
As of last year, the company's revenue had grown every year for the past 20 years and the company was the second-largest operator of private prisons in the United States, according to the Palm Beach Post.
According to fauowlaccess.com, the company's CEO, George Zoley, holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Florida Atlantic University and was once the FAU Board of Trustees chairman.
