FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A group of dogs, saved from deplorable conditions made their way to South Florida on Wednesday.

Staff at the Humane Society Of Broward County along with other shelters are set to find the seven dogs forever homes.

"These dogs have come a long way in a short time," said Jessica Rushin with the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). "They've been treated as products their whole lives and are ready to become pets. We're bringing them to communities across the U.S. in the hopes that local citizens will adopt and give them a second chance."

Five of the pups were pulled from a puppy mill in Needham, Alabama.

More than 130 dogs were seized from the puppy mill, including Chihuahuas, Chows and Pomeranians ranging in age from two months to five years.

"These are animals kept in wire cages, with wire floors. They don't get a lot of human contact.  Their sole purpose in life is to breed puppies," said Cherie Wachter with the Humane Society of Broward County.

The dogs had been living in filthy, deplorable conditions, and many were malnourished. Remains of puppies were also found on the property.

The other two pups came from an animal sanctuary in Arkansas that was under investigation for animal neglect. The group acknowledged they lacked enough resources to take car of the dogs and voluntarily surrendered them to the ASPCA. In all, about 100 dogs were removed from the property and were being placed in shelters around the country.

"The goal, obviously is to find them forever homes for not only these seven animals but for all the other dogs and cats that are waiting, not only in our shelter, but all the shelters  in South Florida," said Wachter.
