MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A beloved high school principal run over by an alleged drunk driver is closer to recovery.

According to the GoFundMe page for South Dade Principal Javi Perez, his wife Maytee says he is off the ventilator and breathing on his own.

She also said he will undergo more surgeries over the next several weeks after having both his legs amputated following the crash at Tamiami Park earlier this month.

Meantime, the driver accused of hitting Perez and two others is out on bond.

Marilyn Aguilera, 51, is under house arrest, charged with DUI and causing great bodily harm to Perez.

Aguilera is also not allowed to drive or consume alcohol. She's surrendered her passport.

Records show Aguilera was ticketed 14 times between 2007 and 2013. Citations ranged from improperly backing up to not having proper insurance. She was cited twice for knowingly driving with a suspended license but never convicted of that.
