Suspect Wanted For Armed Home Invasion In Critical Condition Following Police-Involved Shooting In SW Miami-Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A suspect wanted for an armed home invasion is in critical condition after a police-involved shooting in southwest Miami-Dade.

According to Miami-Dade PD, the officer-involved shooting happened at Quail Roost Drive and SW 115 Avenue.

It all began Monday morning when the suspect, armed with a handgun, broke into a home while a couple was sleeping. Police said he used a rock to beat the victims.

Officers later spotted the suspect in the afternoon, but he was able to elude them.

Police once again located his vehicle at around 7:15 p.m. in the parking lot of a Burger King.

As the officer approached the car, the suspect drove at the officer. It was in that moment the officer fired on the suspect, striking him.

"This is a vehicle throughout the day they were trying to locate because of the fact that this home invasion, from reading the details of the case, he broke into the house while the couple was sleeping, utilized a rock to hit them over the head to try to steal and, of course, armed with a handgun. This was somebody who was clearly in violation of probation for a second degree murder charge," said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta.

The suspect was transported to Jackson South Hospital, where he's listed in critical condition. The officer was not injured.

Police have not identified the suspect. The second degree murder charge was out of Sarasota.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
