Questions Surround Hialeah Clinic's History Following Patient's Death

HIALEAH (CBSMiami) -- The investigation continues into a Hialeah clinic following the sudden death of a woman who underwent a cosmetic procedure.

Officials said Friday that at this time, there is no evidence of criminal activity in the death of Heather Meadows, 29, who was rushed to Palm Springs General Hospital on Thursday after she reportedly suffered "medical complications" at the Encore Plastic Surgery at 1738 W. 49th Street.

The mother of two from West Virginia died a short time later. Authorities have not said what caused her death.

Hialeah Police said her death was accidental.

A witness told CBS4's Hank Tester that she saw Meadows taken out of the clinic in bad shape.

The Florida Department of Health has charged physicians who work at Encore Plastic Surgery and two other clinics, Vanity Cosmetic Surgery and Spectrum Aesthetics in Miami, with medical malpractice and employing unlicensed professionals, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

"Up until this morning, I was coming in to have surgery," said "Antoinette," who flew in from New York to have a procedure called a Brazilian Butt Lift. She changed her mind.

Encore's website lists two surgeons, Dr. James McAdoo and Dr. Orlando Llorente. Neither have any history of complaints or discipline by the state.

It's also not clear if either of these doctors operated on Heather.

Dr. Llorente does have a non-medical criminal record. He was charged in 2013 with the attempted murder of his mistress. Charges were dropped after he completed a court order program.

CBS4 has learned that many doctors operate at Encore and the Vanity Cosmetic Center, an affiliate clinic in west Miami-Dade.

CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald report that surgeons at Vanity and Encore have been cited for malpractice, having unlicensed doctors perform surgery and prescription fraud.

That state has tried to yank the license of Dr. Osak Omulepu, M.D., who seriously injured four patients in two days last year. He's appealing.

Records show many patients have been rushed from these clinics to hospitals after allegedly blown procedures.

Marinela Sanchez said nine months ago she had breast enhancement at Encore and is still affected.

"My husband cannot sleep because I cannot sleep at night. Because of the pain." said Sanchez. "And I have to drink the medications because of the pain. Nine months later."

Along with Meadows' death, it was discovered that another woman died in 2013 at the Vanity clinic following a butt lift procedure.

"The cheap come out expensive," Antoinette has come to realize. "So when you try to save a couple dollars, this is what happens. I'm sorry for the girl and her family. But it just made me know that I'm not going in there to have surgery."

She was also given a refund without a fight.
