MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The pilot of a small plane had to ditch in the ocean after developing engine trouble south of Hollywood beach on Sunday.
The aircraft was about 14 miles offshore when he was forced to make an emergency landing on the water. The Coast Guard immediately began a search after getting a distress call.
"Nothing was out there, when the plane hit the water it just went down," said SeaTow's Brett Sternbach. "There were other units out there from other police agencies who looked around for any debris or any other people. They found out there was only one person onboard, he was safe and sound, and brought him back here (Haulover Beach Marina)."
The FAA released a statement late Sunday afternoon.
A Cessna C172 aircraft made a forced landing in the Atlantic Ocean nine miles southeast of Hollywood, FL at about 3:30 pm today due to an engine-related problem. The aircraft departed North Perry Airport in Hollywood and was heading to Bimini in the Bahamas.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating what caused the plane to go down.
