Newcomers, Old Timers Win Big In Municipal Elections

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Voters in Miramar who went to the polls Tuesday, or voted in absentia, decided that Lori Moseley should keep her job as Mayor.

With 59 percent of the vote Moseley easily defeated challenger John Moore, a former city commissioner, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald. First elected to the city commission in 1995, Moseley won the Mayor's job in 1999 and has held onto it ever since. If she serves her new four year team she will tie with Richard Calhoun as the longest continual Miramar mayor; Calhoun served from 1960 to 1975.

Moseley wasn't the only winner in Miramar's municipal elections. Wayne Messam narrowly edged out Yvette Holt for the District 4 commission seat.

In addition to Miramar, seven other cities and towns held elections on Tuesday.

In Dania Beach incumbent city commissioner Bobbie Grace held onto his seat while former city commissioner Pat Flury was elected to fill a remaining seat. Voters also approved changes in how taxpayer funds should be spent, changes to the city's charter and new rules for term limits.

In Deerfield Beach, commissioners Joe Miller and Sylvia Poitier easily won re-election. In Hillsboro Beach, voters approved another term for town commissioner Dan Dodge and voted in Claire Schubert to fill another commission seat. An open third seat will be decided by a recount; Javier Garcia and Richard Maggiore were the top vote getters at the end of the night.

Glenn Troast was tapped as Lighthouse Point's newest commissioner and in Oakland Park John Adornato III and Shari McCartney won their commission races.

Plantation voters elected Diane Veltri Vendekovic to the Mayor's Office; her father, Frank Veltri, ran Plantation for almost a quarter-century. Incumbents Sharon Uria and Rob Jacobs also got to keep their council seats.

Finally in Pompano Beach Commissioner Woodrow "Woody" Poitier was the top vote getter over three challengers.
