Miami Calls For A "Breather" In Soccer Stadium Talks
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso has called for the city and David Beckham's group to "take a breather" on talks to build a Major League Soccer stadium on a parcel of land next to the AmericanAirlines Arena because right now they are just too far apart on what should be paid as some sort of annual rent.
In the past Miami Beckham United has said that they were willing to pay a "fair" and "reasonable" amount to build a stadium on public land. The number they have reportedly come up with in early talks with the city is in the neighborhood of $500,000 a year, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.
Alfonso told the Miami Herald while they have not countered with their own figure, they were looking ofr more, possibly as high as $12 million to $14 million annually.
Until they can get closer on their numbers, Alfonso has called off a study on how a deal would work financially, if they moved forward plans to fill in an unused deep water basin next to Museum Park and built a 20,000-seat stadium.
Beckham's real-estate adviser, John Alschuler, declined to comment to the Miami Herald on Monday about their discussions with the city. In a wide-ranging interview last week he said they are committed to negotiating with the city in private.
