Deputy okay, suspect shot during Margate burglary investigation, sheriff's office says
A suspect was shot and a Broward deputy is okay after a shooting during a burglary investigation in Margate on Thursday, the sheriff's office said.
Around 2:30 p.m., the Broward Sheriff's Office Burglary Apprehension Team (BAT) was working an investigation near 6100 NW 2nd St. in Margate when a shooting involving deputies happened.
According to BSO's Public Information Officer Miranda Grossman, the situation first began when the Seminole Hard Rock Casino & Resort requested the agency's help in apprehending the suspect.
Seminole police said the suspect grabbed cash from the hand of a patron Thursday morning at Seminole Hard Rock.
Grossman continued, saying the situation moved through the BSO North Lauderdale District's jurisdiction before stopping in the Margate neighborhood.
When deputies encountered the suspect, shots were fired, though it remains unclear who shot first, Grossman said. A deputy was struck by the suspect but was protected by his bulletproof vest and did not sustain life-threatening injuries. BSO said the suspect was also shot.
Both the deputy and the suspect were taken by paramedics to the hospital. BSO did not provide further details regarding the conditions of either the suspect or the deputy.
Margate Police confirmed to CBS News Miami that an incident did occur within their jurisdiction, and none of their officers were injured during the shooting, and that BSO is the lead agency for the investigation.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting itself, while BSO's Internal Affairs Unit is investigating its deputy conduct.
Residents first believed it was fireworks before learning what happened in their neighborhood
Chopper 4 flew over the scene, where a heavy police presence was seen in the area, with law enforcement officers taping off blocks in the neighborhood and investigators surrounding the scene.
CBS News Miami has a crew at the scene of the investigation, where a neighbor said her daughter alerted her to the incident as it unfolded.
"As a matter of fact, my daughter was the one who said, 'Something is happening,' [and] I looked through the back door and there was police, a car, a door was open, someone standing there, and the next thing we heard was gunshots," said Cavine Dickson. "I thought it was a firecracker, but I know it's gunshots because there [were] tons of police."
Dickson continued, saying that though she didn't witness the shooting directly, she could see deputies standing in front of the car door before someone went down.
"I looked outside, and there [were] cars. The next thing I know, I saw someone come out of a car, standing like this, [and] all I heard afterward was no end of shots," she said. "It was like fireworks — pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop."
After she was informed that a burglary investigation was happening at the time of the shooting, Dickson told CBS News Miami that she talked to other neighbors, expressing gratitude for their safety as the shooting unfolded.
