14 Life Sentences For Man Who Shot Officer

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) -- The gunman convicted of shooting and nearly killing a Coral Springs police officer has been sentenced to 14 life terms in prison.

Yancy Polk, 26, received a life sentence for 14 convictions, including attempted murder, kidnapping, robbery, and aggravated assault. He was convicted last year of opening fire with an assault rifle on Officer Paul Kempinski on May 23rd, 2009, when Kempinski responded to a robbery at an Advance Auto Parts store.

Kempinski was shot multiple times and nearly died but managed to pull through multiple surgeries to recover.

After the shooting, Polk broke into a nearby home and held a family of four hostage for more than an hour before he surrendered.

His partner in crime, Jeremiah Derico, pleaded guilty to robbery and is already serving an 18-year sentence.
