HIALEAH (CBSMiami) -- Soccer fans in Hialeah now have four million new reasons to put on their shin pads, lace up their cleats and grab some friends to enjoy the world's most popular sport.
Thanks to the efforts of the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department, the city's $4 million soccer facility at Amelia Earhart Park is now open to the public.
The state-of-the-art complex includes irrigated regulation soccer fields, shaded bleacher-seating, concession areas, picnic shelters and more.
City leaders joined Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Giminez Saturday afternoon to officially open the park, which were followed by youth and adult soccer matches.
"My thanks to the Parks Department for their great work in making this new soccer complex at Amelia Earhart Park a reality. Investments in our parks and open spaces is helping to keep Miami-Dade strong and makes it a great place to live and play," said Mayor Gimenez.
The project was funded by the "Building Better Communities" General Obligation Bond and Quality Neighborhood Improvement Program.
"This soccer field is something the residents wanted," said District 13 Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. "Between water activities, passive activities and sports activities, this park really has everything that a family would want."
