OPA-LOCKA (CBSMiami) – A school in Opa-locka was on lockdown Wednesday afternoon after police recovered a gun on a student.

Police responded, after receiving an anonymous tip about a male student with a gun at the Jan Mann Opportunity School at 1601 NW 44th Ct. in Opa-locka, according to Miami-Dade Schools Police Lt. Raul Correa.

Chopper4 flew over Jan Mann Opportunity School Wednesday afternoon. There were multiple police cars, and dogs on-scene.

Cops retrieved the gun but not without a scuffle.

The 18-year-old student, according to police, was taken to Turner Guildford Knight Correctional Center. The school was still on lock down at that time because the student told police another student had a gun.

"He was in the cafeteria. Police officers came with their guns drawn and then they told everybody, get on the floor," said student Frankie Lopez.

Officers searched all the students in the school.

"Fifteen to twenty-five police officers coming in, each of them with their guns drawn. All of them telling the kids not to move their hands or everybody sit down," said student Giancarlo Gamboa.

But there were no other guns to be found inside or outside of the building.

The one student accused of packing heat had parents besides themselves.

"You know we got to be parents and we're concerned about all this killing ... you know these young kids doing the killing," said parent Isaiah Bullard.

Some parents said the school should have metal detectors at the door. One suggested clear plastic book bags should be required.

The school, according to its website, caters to "disruptive, disinterested, and truant students" from grades 6-12.
