Florida Deputy Delivers Baby After Pulling Over Speeding Car

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - A deputy in Naples, Florida, pulled over a car for speeding and ended up delivering a baby instead of writing a ticket.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office posted on its Facebook page that Deputy Robert Pounds helped deliver the baby girl on the side of a Naples road early Tuesday morning.

Deputy delivers baby during traffic stop

We still can't believe this dash cam video from yesterday morning, when Deputy Robert Pounds helped deliver a baby during a traffic stop. You'll recall that Deputy Pounds stopped a man for speeding early Tuesday morning only to learn the man was rushing his wife to the hospital. Within minutes, the baby was born, right there in the vehicle. In this video, Deputy Pounds narrates the details of the call and talks about having to spring into action to help deliver a healthy baby girl.

Authorities say Pounds spotted a car doing 63 mph (101 kph) in a 45 mph (72 kph) zone and initiated a traffic stop. He approached the car, and the driver told him that his wife was in labor. As the baby's head crowned, Pounds called for an ambulance and grabbed a blanket from his patrol vehicle.

The ambulance arrived minutes after the birth, and rescue workers cut the umbilical cord. The mother and newborn appeared to be in good health and were taken to a nearby hospital.
