Fire Forces Evacuation Of Universal Studios Ride

ORLANDO (CBS4) - Things got a little hot on Dudley Do-Right's Rip Saw Falls at Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure in Orlando after a fire broke out on a roof on the ride.

Park spokesman Tom Schroder said an employee noticed thick black smoke rising from the roof on the log flume ride around 5 p.m. The ride was immediately shut down and evacuated. Schroder said there were passengers on the ride at the time of the fire but he didn't know if any of them were carried under the roof when it was on fire. Several people who said they inhaled smoke were treated on the scene.

It took a about 40 firefighters about half an hour to get the fire under control.

"That type of material puts out a lot of black smoke," Orlando Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hoggatt told the Orlando Sentinel.

Investigators are looking into whether an electrical problem may have sparked the fire.

The ride remained closed Sunday but the rest of the park was open.  Schroder said he did not have a damage estimate or know when the ride would reopen.
