Fernandez Staking Claim To Rookie Of The Year
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Miami Marlins rookie pitching ace Jose Fernandez continued his season of dominance for the Fish by taking out the hottest team in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Fernandez went six strong innings for the Marlins Monday night scattering four hits and two runs during his outing against L.A. Fernandez only gave up one earned run while walking three and striking out eight in the Marlins' victory.
The likely National League Rookie of the Year has now not lost only one start since the end of June. During his last 10 starts, Fernandez has struck out 76 batters and put up a ridiculous 1.64 ERA in 66 innings pitched.
For the season, Fernandez is 9-5, which is 20 percent of the Marlins' total wins this year, and struck out 157 batters. The rookie ace is allowing opposing batters to hit just .189 against him and has a WHIP of 1.02 in 145.2 innings pitched.
Fernandez will likely not have many games left to pitch this season. The Marlins are planning on shutting him down for the season at around 160 innings pitched which would be another start or two.
The Marlins' plan to shut him down will keep his arm from getting overworked in his first year in the majors, especially with Fernandez the future ace of the Marlins' pitching staff.
