Family Gets Unusual Wake Up Call

OAKLAND PARK (CBS4) - An Oakland Park family got an unexpected wake-up call early Wednesday morning after a pick-up truck plowed through the front wall of their living room.

It sounded like a bomb, according to Rosa Romero. "A lot of noise, a lot of noise."

It happened around 6 a.m. in the 600 block of NE 46th Court. The Broward Sheriff's Office said 32-year old Marcelino Mendez-Ramirez was there to pick a friend up for work. When he went to back out, Mendez-Ramirez reportedly admitted to investigators that he put the truck in drive instead of reverse and hit the gas. Mendez-Ramirez, who suffered minor injuries, had to break out windshield and shimmy over the hood to get out of the truck.

The family of four who lived in the duplex was not hurt, but there is extensive damage to their home.

Romero told CBS4's Tiffani Helberg the truck's impact caused glass to break throughout the house, even down a hallway and also blew out a back bedroom window.

"Thank God everything is okay," said Romero. "My son, 11-years old, my daughter, 2 and a ½ years and my husband, thank God."

The sheriff's office did not file any charges against Mendez-Ramirez. However they did however call Border Patrol who took Mendez-Ramirez into custody after it was discovered that he was in the country illegally and did not have a proper license to drive a vehicle in the U.S.
