Exclusive: Sources Say Police Impersonator Is Habitual Offender
NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) – An accused police impersonator who made the serious mistake of thinking he could fool the cops has found himself in serious trouble with the law because police have discovered he's a habitual offender.
Police sources tell CBS4's Peter D'Oench it all started around 5 a.m. when an officer pulled over a car on Opa-Locka Boulevard at Northwest 5th Avenue in North Miami.
Another car that was speeding by was pulled over as well because of the state's "move over law."
Sources said the driver of that second car displayed a fake Miami-Dade Police badge that he had in his wallet.
The source told D'Oench the driver, 32-year-old Jamel Diaz of Miami, claimed he got the badge from a Miami-Dade Police officer and said he used it because it had "gotten me out of trouble."
Police will now try to determine if Diaz really did get the badge from a Miami-Dade officer.
Sources said Diaz has been charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer, unlawfully using a police badge and driving with a suspended license.
Sources said police learned that Diaz is a habitual offender.
