CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) -- The ex-girlfriend of former Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez was arrested after police said she broke into his home and caused a significant amount of damage.
Coral Gables Police responded to Alvarez's home around 12:25 a.m. Sunday to investigate a possible domestic violence incident at an apartment at 55 Merrick Way.
Inside, officers discovered Evelyn Fernandez, a lieutenant with Miami-Dade Police, had damaged several items belonging to the homeowner. She told authorities she didn't have a set of keys to the home, although they noticed that there was no forced entry into the unit.
She was charged with burglary and criminal mischief valued at over $1,000 and taken to TGK.
The incident is just the latest in a string of messy domestic-related issues the former couple has been involved in during their 14-year relationship.
In April, Alvarez, 63, was charged with battery following an alleged altercation with Fernandez. Fernandez said verbal and physical abuse by Alvarez escalated in 2013 after he began a bodybuilding career.
Alvarez has pleaded not guilty in that case and is awaiting a court hearing.
Alvarez was named director of Miami-Dade Police in 1997 and elected county mayor nine years later. However, following a raise in property taxes and the controversial plan to use public money to build Marlins Park in Little Havana, among other criticisms, he was recalled.
